Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz) told reporters on Friday that he is not sure that adding a balanced budget amendment to the House Republican’s debt proposal is the best way to getting it passed.
“Virtually all Republicans would love to see the country pass a balanced budget amendment, whether this is the best way to accomplish that, I’m not sure,” said Kyl.
Kyl added that he feels that in the long run a balanced budget amendment is the only thing that really puts a straight jacket on Congressional spending.
Whether or not the cut cap and balance amendment under the Boehner plan should be attached to an agreement, Kyl said, “Whether this particular formulation is the way to accomplish that result would remain to be seen, depending on how the Senate Democrats respond.”
Kyl said that agrees with John McCain’s criticism of the house tea party freshman saying that McCain was simply reiterating the words of Senate Democrats that they will not support a balanced budget amendment.
