Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) deficit reduction plan strengthened Thursday as Republican House freshmen boasted of nearly full party support.
Over a dozen GOP freshmen rallied on the Capitol lawn to voice their support of the Boehner plan, despite a widespread belief that the bill, “is not perfect.” Many of the GOP freshmen maintain that the bill does not go far enough on spending cuts, but reiterated that it begins a savings process future Congresses could build upon.
Rep. Martha Roby (R-Ala.) explained that it presents the best compromise and cuts the most spending of all plans available.
“We face three options,” said Roby, “We have Speaker Boehner’s plan, which contains significant spending cuts over the next ten years. Then we have Senator Reid’s plan, which is fundamentally a budget gimmick that will not deliver real savings, or we can do nothing.”
Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wisc.) commented, “this is the only proposal on the table that accomplishes the goals we have set out to do.”
