Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.) will not seek an eighth term after a report published over the weekend indicated the Oregon Democrat had a sexual encounter with a teenager.
His decision not to run in 2012 does not mean Wu will immediately resign. Sources close to the story have also signaled that Wu plans to serve for the remainder of the 112th Congress, but pressure from Democratic leadership in the House may pressure Wu to step down sooner rather than later.
House Minority Leader nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) have called on the House Ethics Committee to look into the matter, putting more pressure on the Oregon Democrat to resign.
“I call on the Ethics Committee to initiate an investigation into the allegations against Congressman Wu,” Pelosi said.
Added Israel,” New allegations of unacceptable bahavior by Congressman Wu are extremely serious and disturbing. I strongly agree with Leader Pelosi’s request.”
