Sen. Chuck Schumer praised the Senate Tuesday for confirming Judge Paul Oetken, who will be the first openly gay man to serve as a Federal Judge.

“His confirmation brings us one step closer to equality,” Schumer said in a statement.

Oetken, who will serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, has been a strong advocate for the LGBT community. His confirmation comes in wake of New York legalizing gay marriage.
