The United Nations Security Council announced Friday that it will recommend to the General Assembly that Ban Ki-moon be appointed to his second term as Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The Council’s 15 members met in New York Friday morning and adopted a resolution extending Ban’s tenure in office.

Following the Council’s recommendation, serving a second term will depend on the decision made by the General Assembly. Should Ban’s acclamation resonate in the General Assembly, he would officially begin his second term as U.N Secretary General in January 2012. The four-year term would then end December 31, 2016.
