Some Republican lawmakers are calling on President Obama to re-sign the Patriot Act in his own handwriting.

The group of 19 GOP’ers sent a letter to the president after the White House failed to respond to initial concerns expressed by Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.) in May.

“Mr. President, it is clear that assigning a surrogate the responsibility of signing bills passed by Congress is a debatable issue, and could be challenged in court,” the letter reads. “That being the case, our request is that, out of an abundance of caution, you affix your signature to S. 990 by personally re-signing the enrolled bill.”

Graves, who helped author the follow-up letter, argues that having a surrogate sign bills authorized by Congress could be a violation of the Constitution. He cited Article I, Section 7 of the Constitution, which indicates that a president must sign a bill for it to become the law of the land.
