The Senate Armed Services Committee unanimously approved current CIA chief Leon Panetta’s nomination to become Defense Secretary Tuesday.

Panetta must now wait for the panel to send the matter to the full Senate.

Current Defense Secretary Robert Gates is scheduled to leave the Pentagon at the end of the month. General David Petraeus, who is commanding U.S. troops in Afghanistan, is set to take Panetta’s place at the intelligence agency.
