Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) met Thursday with the head of the top commodities regulator to press for a crackdown on speculators who some have blamed for driving up fuel prices.

Sanders said he questioned CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler over why the agency has not yet begun to enforce new rules within the financial regulation reform law passed last year. The meeting, according to Sanders, did not go as well as he had hoped.

“The American people are hurting, especially in rural states like Vermont.  We need action and we need it now,” Sanders said. “Unfortunately I was very disappointed in the tone of the meeting and the lack of urgency.”
