According to the New York Times, Syria has detained at least 10,000 protesters in the past few days as the government continues to crackdown on ongoing demonstrations across the country.
In addition, the Times is reporting that the government has begun shelling their third largest city.
Human rights groups have claimed that approximately 600 have been killed since the violence began in March. In response, the White House has implemented targeted sanctions, and the European Union is approaching similar steps against certain officials within the country.
