Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is preparing to introduce legislation that would put an end to the tax-free world of Internet shopping.
Durbin’s bill is expected to be unveiled after Congress’ Easter recess and would rewrite the rules for online shopping that allow consumers to sidestep paying state sales taxes.
“Why should out-of-state companies that sell their products online have an unfair advantage over Main Street bricks-and-mortar businesses?” Durbin said, according to reports.
Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) will co-sponsor Durbin’s bill, entitled the Main Street Fairness Act.
