Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) says last week’s compromise between House and Senate leaders on a short-term funding measure is a good start, but more spending should be cut.

“While the cuts included in the resolution funding the federal government for the next two weeks were not nearly enough (only $4 billion), I am pleased it took this important baby step,” Coburn said in a statement.

While Republicans and Democrats spar over how much to cut out of the remainder of the 2011 budget, Coburn wants lawmakers to dig for as much as they can.

“The federal government is borrowing $3 billion a day to stay afloat,” he said. “40 cents of every dollar spent by the federal government is now borrowed. This cannot last.”
