House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters Tuesday that the nuclear crisis facing Japan should serve as a “wake up” call for the United States.

The Maryland Democrat advocated the inspection of nuclear facilities in the country but made clear that he did not support implementing a hold on the development of nuclear energy.

“I don’t agree on a moratorium if a moratorium simply means we stop in place,” Hoyer said.

Hoyer said nuclear energy is a vital source of energy for the nation and he remains to be a proponent of its production.
