Frank Buckles, the last American World War I veteran, died early Monday morning, according to a statement on the veteran’s official website.

Buckles, who was 110, joined the army in 1917 at the age of 16 and served as an ambulance driver.

In 2009, Buckles appeared before Congress to voice support for building a WWI Memorial on the National Mall, a project that he helped spearhead as Honorary Chair of the World War I Memorial Foundation.
