Former President Bill Clinton warns that using excessive amounts of corn to produce ethanol may have a global trickle-down effect, raising food prices and causing food riots in some countries.

The former president told Agriculture Department officials that while reducing the nation’s dependency on foreign oil by producing biofuels via corn, farmers should look for alternatives and be mindful of the needs of developing countries like Malawi and Rwanda.

The African countries of Malawi and Rwanda are two in which Clinton’s foundation has worked to develop agriculture-based business.
