Sen. Richard Shelby called today for a Constitutional amendment aimed at prohibiting the United States from spending more money than it receives in revenue.
“Only a Constitutional amendment would match and remedy the scale of the crisis we face,” Shelby wrote in an op-ed Tuesday in the Birmingham News. “I believe my legislation will finally put our nation on a path toward paying off our national debt.”
Sen. Shelby is expected to introduce his balanced budget amendment to the Constitution this afternoon.
Shelby chairs the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Development Committee.
