Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.), a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, warned President Obama on Tuesday against closing the U.S. military’s detainee detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Specifically, Miller urged the president to not sign a statement that would overrule a provision within a recently-passed defense spending bill that prevents Obama from closing Gitmo. Obama is set to sign the bill into law in the coming days, but could block that provision by issuing what is known as a signing statement.
“A broad bipartisan majority of both houses of Congress supported this provision which bars expending any funds for the transfer of these terrorist enemies into our nation in order to deny them access to our civilian courts,” said Miller.
“If the President is determined to work against the will of Congress, then he should use the only tool available to him under the Constitution and veto the legislation. Congress should then act quickly to override that veto so the will of the American people can be carried out.”
