Citing concerns that it will ultimately privatize social security and Medicare, Senate Democrats issued a statement today challenging Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wisc.) budgetary guideline “Roadmap For America’s Future.”

“In recent days, enough top Republicans have endorsed Ryan’s “roadmap” for dismantling Social Security and Medicare that the plan has in effect become the official position of the Republican Party,” the statement from the Democratic Policy and Communications Center reads.

Ryan, the Chair of the House Budget Committee, is scheduled to give the Republican response to the President’s State of the Union address this evening.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is also urging Ryan to not gloss over the controversial segments of his proposal in his remarks.

“Paul Ryan owes it to the national audience tonight to explain why he wants to privatize Social Security and Medicare,” Schumer said. “He can’t sweep his roadmap under the rug just because the spotlight will be shining brighter than usual.”
