The Department of Defense recently announced that two more Guantanamo Bay detainees have been realeased.
As directed by the President’s January 22, 2009 executive order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of these cases. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, the detainees were approved for transfer by unanimous consent among all the agencies involved in the task force.
According to a press release, the two prisoners are set to be transferred to Spain and Latvia, respectively. However, due to privacy concerns and at the request of the receving governments, the identities of the former GITMO prisoners are being with held at this time.
Since 2002, more than 600 Guantanmo detainees have departed the facility for other countries and only 176 remain.
