Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) announced his plans to run to replace current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a two-hour debate with his Republican opponent Jeff Miller.
First reported by Asheville’s Citizen Times, the former Washington Redskins’ quarterback said that without a “viable alternative” he would step up to the plate.
“I can do as good a job as anybody in the U.S. Congress, because I can actually bring people together,” Shuler said.
After being asked by Miller if the incumbent would vote in favor of Pelosi, Shuler answered, “If that’s the alternative, I’ll be voting for myself.”
