New claims for unemployment benefits have hit a three-month low, according to the Department of Labor.
The department said that the number of claims dropped 22,000 last week with an accumulated season average of 434,000, much lower than was estimated by Labor Department officials.
The number of people still receiving benefits after an initial week of aid dropped 122,000 to 4.36 million in the week ended October 16. That was the lowest reading since the week ended November 22, 2008. The prior week’s number was revised up to 4.48 million
