Sen. John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) asked the head of the largest social networking site in the world on Tuesday for a response to a new report highlighting privacy breaches within the company.

Rockefeller, who chairs the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, wrote to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg after the Wall Street Journal last week published a story claiming that applications on the site had transmitted users’ real names to third party advertisers.

The West Virginia Democrat also wrote to MySpace President Michael Jones after a subsequent Wall Street Journal investigation determined that that company had also transferred user ID’s to outside companies.
