Louis Tucker, the Republican Staff Director for the Senate Intelligence Committee, argued Tuesday that any efforts from the U.S. to legislate cyber-security should not mandate the private sector’s cooperation.
“All the federal government needs to do is to support [the private sector] with technology and information and then get out of their way,” Tucker said during a discussion at the Heritage Foundation.
The director explained that businesses have incentives to protect their assets without the government’s overt involvement.
Tucker added that any legislation dealing with cyber-security should be drafted and passed at a gradual rate.
“We should crawl, then walk and then run,” he said. “Rushing through a cyber bill is not going to get much attraction.”
