We’ve seen riots around the world. In Egypt and Syria, protesting against oppressive regimes. In Greece, protesting against cutbacks in government benefits. Now in England—those wanting more government handouts have burned and looted much of London.

Americans ask: Could it happen here, as government has to stop doing so much and stop spending so much.

Enter the mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an African-American Democrat, Michael Nutter, responding to what Philly has called “flash riots.” Mayor Nutter let loose and put the blame on what he called “irresponsible parents and their ignorant, slovenly and undisciplined kids.” Those are his very words.

Coming from a black politician speaking to a black audience, it was a remarkable performance that has resonated across the country. He deserve some credit for courage and candor—two things that are all too rare.
