The majority of voters attribute the condition of the economy to former President George W. Bush, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University.
The survey found that only 27 percent of voters place the blame for the strained economy on President Barack Obama, as opposed to 54 percent who named Bush.
In addition, the poll shows that 45 percent of respondents trust President Obama to handle the economy, opposed to 38 percent who said they trust Congressional Republicans. Still the majority of voters continue to disapprove of how the President is handling the economy overall by a margin of 56-38 percent.
The poll comes amid ongoing negotiations aimed at raising the debt ceiling while simultaneously reducing the deficit. The administration and economists have warned that if the U.S. fails to raise it’s limit by August 2nd, it will have a catastrophic impact on the economy. According to Quinnipiac, if lawmakers fail to increase the ceiling, most voters will blame Republicans over the President by 48-34 percent.
The poll was conducted between July 5 through the 11th among 2,311 registered voters.
