World Leaders Defend Continued Libya Campaign

The international mission to protect the people of Libya against their ruler, Muammar Gaddafi, will continue until Gaddfi is forced out of power, said leaders of three of the most powerful nations in the world on Friday.

In a joint op-ed that appeared in today’s New York Times and a trio of international newspapers, U.S. President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron all insisted, however, that while Gaddafi must go, a political transition must be facilitated by the Libyan people.

“Our duty and our mandate under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973 is to protect civilians, and we are doing that. It is not to remove Qaddafi by force,” the leaders wrote. “But it is impossible to imagine a future for Libya with Qaddafi in power.”
