Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was elected Chicago’s next mayor Tuesday.
According to unofficial results released reported by the AP, Emanuel was elected with 55 percent of the vote, which means he will avoid a run-off election in April.
Chicago-based attorney and politico Gery Chino came in second with 24 percent of the vote. Carol Moseley Braun, a former State Senator, came with under 10 percent of the vote.
President Obama, who Emanuel served for two years, issued a statement Tuesday night congratulating his former Chief of Staff.
“As a Chicagoan and a friend, I couldn’t be prouder,” Obama said. “Rahm will be a terrific mayor for all the people of Chicago.”
