Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) was formally elected Speaker of the House Wednesday as the 112th Congress came into session.

Boehner, who served as Minority Leader since 2006, was nominated by Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) who heralded the Ohio Congressman’s blue collar roots and subsequent rise to success.

“At a time when too many doubt that their children will have a chance to live the American dream, he has lived the American dream and will protect it for others to come after him,” Hensarling said.

Boehner received backing from all 241 Republicans. Outgoing speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who was also nominated, gained 173 votes, with 19 Democrats withholding their support.
