Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Afghanistan Monday in an unannounced trip to the country.

The primary purpose of the visit is to “assess progress toward the transition to Afghan-led security beginning in 2011, and to demonstrate our commitment to a long- term partnership with Afghanistan,” according to a White House official.

Biden is scheduled to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai as well as the U.S. Commander in Afghanistan General David Petraeus and Ambassador Karl Eikenberry. He is also expected to greet members of the U.S. military and tour an Afghan National Army Training Center.

This is Biden’s first trip to the country as Vice President.
