President Barack Obama urged college students Monday to support Democrats in the upcoming Congressional elections.
Speaking during a conference call with a collection of student journalists, the President conceded that many college-age adults may feel disillusioned by the political atmosphere, but argued that the legislative agenda that landed both Obama and Congressional Democrats in power still stands.
“You can’t sit it out,” Obama said. “You can’t suddenly just check in once every ten years or so in an exciting presidential election and then not pay attention during big midterm elections.”
Obama’s appeal comes as part of a larger White House effort to re-energize the young voters who actively campaigned for Obama during the 2008 Presidential election. On Tuesday, the President is scheduled to hold a rally at the University of Wisconsin and will reportedly tailor his remarks for students.
