The House of Representatives voted 219 to 212 to pass historic health care reform legislation late Sunday night, with House Democrats heralding the victory with cries of “Yes We Can.”
The legislation, which is the version initially passed in the Senate in December, lacks several key factors sought by House Democrats. A vote on a set of amendments, or a reconciliation bill, is scheduled for later Sunday night.
After the bill is signed into law by president Barack Obama, the Senate will vote to approve the reconciliation bill. Although the Senate has yet to take on numerous pieces of legislations taken on by the House, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) assured House Democrats Saturday that the Senate will act promptly to pass the bill.
When the House originally voted on health care reform legislation in November, it passed by 220 to 215, surpassing the 218 needed. A number of those in the House have since resigned bringing the minimum needed to 216.
