Only 17 percent of Americans are satisfied with the current direction of the U.S., according to a new Gallup poll.

Although 17 percent is a drop from the historical average of 20 percent, it is still higher than the 7 percent in October of 2008, the lowest that Gallup had measured since polling general satisfaction in 1979.

According to Gallup, the struggling economy is likely the catalyst behind the low satisfaction rate, since 30 percent of those polled answered that the economy is the top problem along with an additional 24 percent who answered that it was unemployment.

The poll was conducted among a randomly selected group of 1,019 adults. There is a margin of error of 4 precent.
