President Barack Obama called on Congress Wednesday to make a $2,500-a-year tax credit aimed at helping middle-class families pay for community college tuition permanent.

“Offering our children a world-class education isn’t just a moral obligation, it’s an economic imperative,” Obama said from the White House Rose Garden.

Obama also warned against allowing Congressional Republicans to pursue an education policy that would make funding cuts.

“They’ve proposed cutting back on education by 20 percent.  That means reducing financial aid for eight million students and leaving our community colleges without the resources they need to prepare our students for the jobs of the future,” Obama said.
